Mission & Programs     Our Facility     About Us

There are 4 sea turtle species in Banyuwangi - Jawa Timur (East Java) province - Indonesia; they are:
And they are all endangered.

Marine biologists believe out of every 1,000 baby sea turtles in nature, only 1 can survive until they reach adulthood; that means their survival rate is only 0.1 %. Beside from human predation, plastic waste in the sea, natural predation - animals such as birds, crabs, ants, lizards, wild boars and larger fish, is the main reason for the high mortality rates of hatchlings.

Therefore on July 27, 2011, Yayasan Penyu Banyuwangi, or in English, Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation was founded in Banyuwangi, a city on the tip of East Java province, Indonesia. It lies just across the strait from Bali Island. Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation is a non-profit - non-government group working to protect and conserve sea turtles.
