There are 4 sea turtle species in Banyuwangi - Jawa Timur (East Java) province - Indonesia; they are:
2. Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas)
3. Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricate)
4. Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys Olivacea)
And they are all endangered.
Marine biologists believe out of every 1,000 baby sea
turtles in nature, only 1 can survive until they reach adulthood; that means their
survival rate is only 0.1 %. Beside from human predation, plastic waste in the sea, natural
predation - animals such as birds, crabs, ants, lizards, wild boars and larger
fish, is the main reason for the high mortality rates of hatchlings.
turtle ........... :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this information. I found the Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation website, however, you site is a little clearer and in English. I spent time there on 8/3/2016 and the picture of my group, Friendship Force Columbia Cascade, was posted on the Foundation's Facebook page. I reported the picture plus the translation of the statement on my Facebook page, Keeping Kurrent. It was truly a great experience. I hope to interview some of the group's leaders soon.
